Geometry and Combinatorics
Workshop at Northern Arizona University
January 4-5, 2004, Flagstaff, AZ

Travel Info

Here is some local information to help you as you make travel plans for the Flagstaff portion of "Geometry and Combinatorics." Flagstaff is located in the north-central part of Arizona, about 2 1/2 hours drive north of Phoenix. To get here from the airport in Phoenix exit the airport to the west toward 24th St. and follow signs for I-10 West or I-17 North. (I-10 West intersects I-17 North in two places: at 24th Street at the airport, and also west of 19th Ave.) In any case, you want to leave Phoenix on I-17 North. One hundred twenty miles later you'll be in Flagstaff, on Milton Road. The Quality Inn and Embassy Suites will be on your right, about one mile north of the I-40 interchange. The university is just east of these hotels.

You might want to take the more touristic route, in which case you would exit I-17 at Hwy. 179 West to Sedona, then in Sedona turn right onto Hwy. 89A North. This route adds 30-60 minutes to the trip.

If the roads are wet or snowy, the last 40 miles into Flagstaff can be quite treacherous, especially after dark when the temperature drops considerably and the roads become icy. Highway 89A should be avoided in these circumstances. In case the driving conditions are bad, you may want to spend the night in Cottonwood or Camp Verde.

There are four or five daily flights from Phoenix to Flagstaff; The cost is around $100 each way. There is a shuttle service, Open Road Tours, that costs $30 one way, $56 round trip, and runs about four times a day; check the website http://www.openroadtours.com/ and click on "Flagstaff" to see the schedule. The last northbound shuttle leaves the Phoenix Airport at 7:30 pm. It's important to make shuttle reservations at least a few days in advance to be ensured a seat. There may be rides available back to Phoenix on Tuesday - if you're interested let us know.

We have reserved blocks of discounted rooms at two local hotels - mention the conference "Geometry and Combinatorics" at NAU when you make your reservation:

This one is about 15 minutes' walk from the math building, with a coffeehouse on the way.

This is more like five minutes from the math building. Both hotels are no more than 15 minutes from the airport.

The workshop will take place in Room 164 of the Adel Mathematics Building. The building is located at Knoles Drive and McCreary Dr., just across the street from Cline Library. (There are two adjacent buildings there; the mathematics building is the larger of the two.)

Flagstaff is at an elevation of 7000 feet; the temperatures are likely to be in the 30's (Fahrenheit!) in the day and very cold at night, while Phoenix will be about 30 degrees warmer. According to the long-term forecast it should still be dry in early January. Here's hoping the weather up here is agreeable.
